Girls steal spotlight in Ontario’s Steeltown

HAMILTON, Canada – When your World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend features close to 20 games with more than 500 girls participating, you know you must be doing something right. But Saturday’s successful event showcasing many of the top bantam and midget players in Ontario’s third-largest city didn’t come out of nowhere. 

In fact, the seeds were sown back in April 2014, when the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association (SCGHA) hosted the ESSO Cup in partnership with the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association and Hockey Canada. The ESSO Cup is the girls’ midget national championship, and it helped the SCGHA build new relationships, including with Cable 14.

The Stoney Creek Sabres will be well represented

The Stoney Creek Sabres will be well represented at the CIS Women’s Hockey National Championships and the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Hockey National Championship Tournament over the next several weekends.

There are 8 Sabres Alumni from three Universities who will be in Calgary at the 2016 National Championships MARCH 17 – 20, 2016

Guelph University (OUA Champions): Laura Crowdis, Claire Merrick, Mallory Young

St. Mary’s University (AUS Champions): Rebecca Johnson, Caitlin Schell

St. Thomas University: Taylor Cook, Paige Jackson, Kristina Kocsis

There are 7 Sabres Alumni that will be participating in the NCAA Division 1 Tournament starting Saturday March 12th.

Mercyhurst College: Hannah Bale, Nicole Collier, Sarah Hine, Sarah McDonnell (CHA Goalie of the Year and CHA All-Rookie team), Rachael Smith (CHA Rookie of the Year and CHA All-Rookie team)

University of Wisconsin: Sydney McKibbon, Sarah Nurse (All-WCHA 3rd team)

Other former Sabres in the news

University of Connecticut Goalie Elaine Chuli was named to the All-Hockey East 1st team.

Robert Morris University: Sarah Quaranta was named to the CHA All-Rookie team.

Brianne Jenner and Laura Fortino were named to the Canadian National Women’s Team who will participate in the IIHF Women’s World Championships in Kamloops at the end of March.
